I found this on Amazon while searching for a particular hymn for my father's funeral. It was one of his favorites and I had searched for it for years without success. I stumbled across a small website with the hymn and a note from someone giving the name and ISBN number of the hymnal where it could be found, and Amazon had it in stock, to my joy and amazement. I quickly ordered it with one-day shipping. When it arrived, it had the exact hymn I had been looking for plus many other favorites from my childhood. The hymn was played and sung at my father's funeral and my only regret is that I didn't find it while he was still living so that we could have enjoyed it together.Anyone looking for the great traditional hymns, particularly from the Methodist hymnal, would enjoy having this. This little hymnal is one I will always keep and treasure.
I'm reviewing this spiral-bound format, not the content. (I didn't grow up Methodist but I've enjoyed getting to know these older songs of faith.) As others have said, the print in the spiral-bound edition *is* pretty small. It seems like the publisher could easily offer a larger format. I'm including an image to show you the size and an example of the notation. I bought this to use for our church seniors' weekday worship time and I think it will do the job (as long as my eyes don't get any worse!).
Our church long ago abandoned using this old hymnal. In a group of friends, we started reminiscing about "Sunday School Assembly" where we as children learned many of these songs while an older lady pounded the day lights out of the piano. Having realized that I couldn't recall many of the words, I decided to see if I could buy this old standby. I was delighted to find it. Now my family will enjoy singing together and listening to me attempting to sing solo with my "slippery" old voice.
I love the songs. I ding them in the evenings with my prayer time.
I loved this hymnal as a young girl and always looked forward to Sunday evening service when we would use this hymn book instead of the red hymnal. Brought back a lot of memories. This was in new condition, but still had the brown edging on the pages.
This hymnal is where I learned by heart the hymns of the church. It brings me back into the early memories of my boyhood, with my parents and brothers, going to church regularly and to summer tent revivals in eastern Kentucky. It contains the hymns and tunes I have chosen for my own funeral service--when such time comes as the Lord calls me to His Eternal Home.
I love the Cokesbury hymnal and was excited to see the accompaniest edition. However, was disappointed that it is tiny, not even as big as the Cokesbury pew hymnal. Since I am sight challenged, this was an issue, and the only reason not to give 5 stars. I would expect the accompaniest edition to have been larger for pianists to be able to easily read.
This was exactly what my mom wanted & was just how she remembered it.
