This book is written with the sensitivity that only is found in listeners. Patrick has written, not only as an expert in the field, but also as someone who has walked the walk with patients and families in deep despair. There is no silver bullet or formula for success here, but rather a tried and true method of listening to the patient and the voice of God at the same time. As a Hospice volunteer, I devoured the book, and I will begin putting its insight and suggestions to work immediately. This will become my “go to†book for as long as I volunteer, Patrick’s easy style of writing and his obvious closeness to the Spirit of God, make this book invaluable in treating the suffering with dignity and grace. Thank you, Patrick!
I’ve been a pastor for 18 years. For the past 2 years, I’ve been a hospital chaplain. And my wife and I have had our own grief. After trying to figure out how to explain to others how they can help those who are in grief, I finally have a resource to hand them. Patrick’s book is like the best parts of a coaching conversation with Patrick. The examples, the direction of what to say and what not to say, the thoughtfulness all come through in this book. I’ve had the opportunity to work with him in real life, and now I can share that with others.
This is an excellent book. Practical, down-to-earth, with real life experiences that any of us have, could or will go through. Pastor Riecke emphasizes the importance of being there, being present-even if you don't (or can't) say a word. Also gives fine examples or what you could say and what not to say. This is a great book for any of us, as we all will experience being with sick, dying and grieving folks at some point in life.
I am about the enter the chaplaincy and I have to say this book opened my eyes and burst my heart. I have been a pastor for years and have walked with families through about everything but as a chaplain i know this will be my every day ministry. This book shows the heart you must have to enter each family's crisis and how to be an agent of God's peace and love. The principles are a simple guide. The stories help you process your theology and how best to show God's love in any given situation.
The writer offers different ways how to broach the topic of advance care directives in a non threatening way to enable a productive, thoughtful conversation to learn how one wishes to die when their time has come. Learning what FULL CODE is makes me think this type of life saving measure should be done only on younger, healthy people who are NOT in a hospital setting. For an older adult who is in the throes of dying, CPR seems like a cruel and unusual punishment that will only cause greater suffering. What I liked most about the book is the concept of viewing life and death through the three phases, especially the third phase: finding meaning through suffering.
With a family member in the care of hospice, I was looking for guidance in how to navigate conversations about the final stages of life. I found this book through 300wordsaday.com and gave it a try.The book hit the mark, with good advice presented in a way that was practical to apply. The 3 stages make sense and align with a faith based approach to dealing with these difficult times.
Having worked for several years as a hospital chaplain, many of the cases cited in this book hit home. The last chapter covering the loss of an unborn baby did in particular as I helped one of our own staff members through this ordeal recently.I highly recommend this book for anyone who works with people facing trauma, pain, or death.
As a layperson, I highly recommend everyone read this resource . As we walk through life, we all rub shoulders and/or have gone through sick, dying and grieving. This book gives helpful guidance and pitfalls to avoid. thank you Patrick for writing this book for easy reference.thank you for being my pastor when I was grieving the loss of a dear loved one. The church body and your family cared for me.. You walk the talk!
