Yall ever wanna get a calculus book to flex on them statistics ass nibbas. They think they the best over there looking at their bell curves. Well guess what? with this you can say you know how to calculate the area underneath the curve. Lets be real about this for a second. Aint no nibba got time for reading. We too busy getting the crumbs to be focused on this. So you can walk around with this in any setting and look like you know calculus. Cuz lets be honest this bih be hard. Newton really got all goofed up thinking we gonna use this in life. You know what i do be using in life tho? some boxing gloves. I have to fight off all these nerds tryna get a look at my book like "is that really an integral of e^x squared let me set that as a taylor series" "ooh let me do all the odd problems and check the answers in the back of the book" No gtfo and catch this quick right hook. Calculate the surface area my fist gonna cover on your face bih. So if you wanna do all that this book right here is for you
This review is for the HYBRID edition, which is not the full book, leaving out some critical content that is included with the other 7th edition versions ("Calculus" and "Single Variable Calculus") by the same author. The differences are not mentioned anywhere in the Amazon product description, which appears to reference "Calculus," regardless of which of the 3 versions is selected for viewing. Additionally, the content shown when you click "Look Inside" is NOT from the Hybrid edition, which is not the same. While the other versions of the book apparently have all required course content for a Calculus class, the Hybrid edition leaves out the end-of-section exercises normally assigned as homework (or for self-review). In the Hybrid edition, the missing end-of-section exercises are available on the publisher's "WebAssign" website, and access must be separately purchased for a minimum of $75.00. So by itself, the Hybrid edition won't be sufficient for a Calculus class unless it was specifically assigned by your instructor.
This is a relatively good book on calculus. However, this book does not explain the "why"s of calculus very well. I guess if youare into rote problem solving without clear foundation, is is good book for you. This textbook is 1200 pages. How many pages will be actually covered in one semester using this book? The content is relatively well written (they had 8 revision so far to get it right). The amount of examplesis relatively large comparable to other similar text books. My pet gripe in the textbook industry in the arrival of new editions every year or two. This book is no exception. The difference between this version and version 8 a so slight, it begs the question "how do you justify a new +200$ text book"?Another gripe. is that there are so many variations on similar topics, early trancedental, calculus on single variable, on multiple variables, etc.If you cannot get at least that in a single volume 1200 page text book, then there might be other motive for all these differentversions.I know, you have no choice is your school select this book to use in class.
Originally I thought this was one of the worst introductory Calculus texts ever written and this was after using Stewart's Precalculustext which I thought was very well written and accessible to the target audience. I have now worked my way up to Differential Equations and Linear Algebra all totally on my own - no professors, classmates, lectures, etc. I mention this because my progresshas only to do with me and my textbook(s).Most of the criticisms that I have of the textbooks I have seen still stand - they are poorly written for the target audience. However, now that I have a more advanced perspective I can see that a lot of the published criticisms are the sour grapes resulting frompoor precalculus preparation, low motivation to study mathematics, poor writing and teaching, etc.Having my experience let me now tell you how to learn Calculus:1) Get real good at Algebra and Precalculus.2) Use textbooks by Stewart, Larson and Edwards, Michael Sullivan, Thomas and Finney,3) Do problems until your eyes are falling out of your head.4) Write extensive notes and then ask yourself could someone learn Calculus with only these notes. If the answer is no throw themaway and rewrite them.5) Use the Internet - you cannot imagine how many websites there are for all mathematics at any leve. Finally, Dr.Stewart I apologize for the very badly inaccurate review I gave your book - it is not the easiest book for a beginner inCalculus but it is accessible and good good preparation for DE's and Linear Algebra.
