First, I Love this book and very much enjoy Nigel Calders writing. I have encountered this book on other peoples boats for some years now and felt maybe it was time I get my own copy. I wrongly assumed that Nigel like other sailor/writers of cruising books dating even back to the 1970's had updated or amended the book where appropriate. This was definitely an error. There have simply been too many changes in the last decade to recommend this book. Perhaps at 1/3 of Amazons current price I could justify it, but as it stands it is as obsolete as my old 121 EPIRB. I will be returning it.
Excellent book. Very detailed. Everything you need to know if you are thinking about buying a bluewater sailboat before you do it.I am so glad I bought this book and took the time to go through it.Less than $50.00 and it may have saved is 10s of thousands in ignorant mistakes.
This is the energy drink of boat books, if you only have room for one book on your boat, this should be it. If you don't have a boat but are shopping for one to spend some time on, even more reason to purchase, it will easily pay for itself and put a realistic focus on dreams.
I wish I had bought this book before I bought my newest old boat - my personal survey would have been much more effective.This book covers so much, so well. Mr. Calder obviously not only has the knowledge but the motivation to really think about what should go into each area. He covers choosing, maintaining, upgrading, and cruising a boat to just the right degree that if you had no other resources, this book would usually suffice. And he does this in such a relatively small book.
I haven't finished this book yet, but, so far, I've found the writing style enjoyable. It contains lots of useful information, both basic and technical. Read this one before reading Boatowner's Electric and Mechanical Manual to gain a broader view of setting up a boat to go cruising.
This is a great book for helping any sailor, both novice or expert, about what it takes to sail coastal or offshore water. In depth knowledge of boat systems, what should be and not be on your boat and what to look for in a cruising boat. You can't do much better if you're looking for a book about blue water sailing.
If you're already out cruising, this book isn't going to provide a lot of useful information -- it's more about what to think about before buying a cruising boat and outfitting it for your purposes.I wish I'd read this before we bought our boat as it would have given us a better framework for a lot of the decisions we had to make.
As usual with Nigel Calder, his information is wide-ranging and extensive in this excellent collection of essentials for cruisers and things just nice to have. Some of the information is out of date, obviously, but still useful.
