Daniel Pike and his colleagues at the Last Chance Lawyers are some of the most interesting characters I have seen introduced in recent years. Dan Pike is a far different bird than William’s other two most popular series protagonists, Ben Kincaid and Susan Pulaski. He likes the best of things and is used to a posh lifestyle, which is threatened when he succeeds on a case in a manner the founder of his firm finds distasteful. After drowning his sorrows, Dan finds a new opportunity that is as strange as it is financially rewarding. To succeed this time, he has to tap into something he has always considered irrelevant, caring about his client. The tragically flawed handling of refugees and aspiring immigrants by the current U.S. administration is central to the case. The impact of this farce on people and their families is shown with a reality and urgency that is absolutely appropriate.All of the characters, whether major or minor, mostly good or mostly evil, are drawn with a depth that makes the reader anxious to learn more about their stories. But you never forget this is a thriller. The plot twists are frequent, very well developed, and never disappointing. This is the kind of book you want to read in one sitting and then read again to savor the deeper meaning. I look forward to watching this series develop and explore topics of such relevancy and complexity with the level of commitment displayed here.
If you're a fan of William Bernhardt, you won't be disappointed. If you're a new reader, you will have found a prolific bestselling author you can happily binge on while you are waiting for the next in this new series which returns to the courtroom. I'm not revealing any spoilers here but Bernhardt shines in courtroom dramas and this is no exception. The protagonist and his team represent a fresh concept with unlimited potential going forward, the setting is unusual, and the plot is compelling and timely. Plenty of twists and turns and well fleshed out interesting characters. I happily read it in one sitting.This is a series I'll definitely be reading.Highly recommended.
