Randy is a natural storyteller and you can't help but be sucked in immediately through his story. I as well am not a sportsman but I really appreciate the camaraderie that the characters develop and maintain throughout the series (have read through the second book). It makes you want to be part of a team. And makes you want to solve a mystery. And want to believe in something greater than yourself. First class, Randy.Now, if I could only build a treehouse like that for myse..., uh, my son, yeah, that's it, my son :-)
Engaging and fun story for fans of all ages (and not just of baseball)!Ballshark captured my attention right away with its vivid imagery and focus on drawing the reader into the feelings of the characters as they LIVED their moments on the baseball field. The story of a "tween" boy grappling with friends of a different culture, his love for a game that sometimes doesn't play out his way, and...gasp.... his discovery that girls might just be worth his time, appeals to so many different readers. My 12-year-old daughter, 9-year-old son and I all loved this book! We don't even play baseball! This was a page-turner. I wanted to know not only how the game would turn out, but what was going to happen next with Ryne, his dad, Sean, and the mysterious newcomer, Mano. The supporting characters were so fun to read about. I found myself picturing exactly these same people in my own world and memories of growing up in "the neighborhood" and youth select sports. This first installment in what will undoubtedly be an amazing series was fun, smart, well-written and wonderful. Series is off to an engaging, playful and completely worthwhile, start!
I bought this book for my son at a baseball tournament where the author was signing. He isn't a huge reader-- often losing interest. But he has DEVOURED this series and is looking forward to reading the next one. He's learned about team work and treating everyone like family, all skills he's taken to the field with his teams.
I loved this book! There were many nights I stayed up too late reading this book because I couldn't put it down. If you are a fan of baseball- READ THIS BOOK! If you aren't a fan of baseball and love a great story- READ THIS BOOK! Readers of all ages will love this book, children, parents and grandparents. I can't wait to read the rest of the books and learn what happens to Ryne, Mano and the Intimidators.
