Gr 3-5-This nonfiction picture book follows Clara Luper from her childhood to her mentorship of students in nonviolent resistance during the 1950s and 60s. As an Oklahoma City school teacher, Luper wrote a play for her pupils, who then toured cross-country with her and witnessed the contrast between the integrated Northern cities they visited and the still segregated Southern cities they performed in, and were subsequently motivated to affect positive change in their communities back home, including sit-ins. Rhuday-Perkovich's decision to include Luper's struggle between wanting to keep her students safe and wanting them to act humanizes this civil rights hero, and makes her choices more relatable and meaningful, as does the author's powerful word choice in describing the abusive drugstore customers not as anonymous bullies, but as spitting mothers and screaming fathers. This reminder that the struggle for equality is just as much mental as physical adds a welcome profundity. Johnson has illustrated the narrative in a tableau style, with a bold yellow- and blue-based color palette. The focal points are the expressive outsized faces of the cast of characters, who are all carefully posed. Unembellished backgrounds in muted tones make these characters (and several "whites only" signs) stand out all the more boldly. Back matter includes a brief biography of Luper and explains the four steps of nonviolent resistance depicted in the book. Clara Luper was an amazing person--writer, educator, and activist. The story unfolds nicely. You learn in the first few pages how Clara Luper went from a child living in segregated America to a teacher leading sit-ins. Seeing Clara Luper's students eagerly participate, survive bullying, and evolve into resilient human beings that made real change happen was awe inspiring. It gave me goosebumps. I cried.
Gave this to my Mom for Christmas. She was deeply touched. She studied and attended sit-ins under Ms. Luper's direction, as did many of my aunts and uncles.
This is an awesome book about woman and students who integrated restaurants several years before the civil right sit-ins began. Thank you Ms. O. for writing such wonderful children's book!

Someday is Now is a children’s book about the life of Clara Luper, a young black woman from Oklahoma City who would unwittingly spark a string of lunch counter sit-ins that would help to break up segregation in the South. As a little girl, Clara dreamed of the day when segregation would be no more, when she could fully participate in society the way that white folks could. As an adult, she pursued her education and became a teacher that empowered and encouraged her students to actively, but nonviolently, assert their rights. After a class trip to the desegregated North, her students were further impassioned to take action, and after trying other avenues and failing, opted to sit-in at a lunch counter, ordering and refusing to go outside as was expected. Instead, they sat in the Whites Only section, despite being yelled at, called horrible names, even having food thrown at them. They stayed and studied and returned the next day. And the next. And the next. Until the business owner finally broke down and made all of his locations fully accessible to people of all colors. Clara and her students then moved onto the next business, and the next, for years, making strides towards desegregation one business at a time, and inspiring others to do the same.What a powerful story about the power of nonviolent activism, as well as the power that even the smallest of us have to change the world. While I wasn’t crazy about the illustrations (usually an important factor for me when it comes to children’s books), the history and the message in this book are priceless. I’m very much looking forward to reading it with my children.Note: I received this book from the publisher via Edelweiss. I pride myself on writing fair and honest reviews.
