About the Author

Diane M. Stortz is an author and former editorial director whose heart’s desire is to “tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord” (Psalm 78:4). I love the premise of this picture Bible: forty stories that illustrate the character of God. One of my main complaints about much of Christian children's literature is that it boils the Bible down to lessons in morality that parents can use to encourage children to "be good." While it is obviously important that we obey God, children need to first understand that it is only because God came to rescue us through Jesus' death and resurrection and the Spirit's enabling that they can obey at all! This book points every story not just toward a moral lesson, but to God and what he has revealed about himself in the stories. THEN it explains how that aspect of God's character impacts our lives and actions.Another thing I love about this Bible is that each story has multiple parts which parents can use to customize the lesson for their child's age and spiritual maturity, or even the amount of time they have to read right then:1) A name of God, ex: "Creator: Elohim"2) A story from the Bible that illustrates that aspect of God's character (ex: the creation story)3) A key takeaway from the story (ex: "We live in a colorful, wonderful world with amazing sights and sounds. Someone powerful and loving made it all!")4) A "What Does It Mean" section that draws an example from everyday life (ex: making crafts or baking) and helps apply the story to life5) One or two verses quoted directly from the Bible. The translations vary; many are from the English Standard Version (ESV), and others are Amplified, God's Word, the International Children's Bible, and the New Living Translation.6) A "Learn More" section suggesting another Bible passage parents could read to their kids to further explain the name of God. This is a great resource to go deeper with older kids.7) A short "What Happened Next" paragraph either summarizing events that happened between the story and the next story, or introducing the next story8) A short prayer thanking God for what the story reveals about him (ex: "Dear God, thank you for making the world. Thank You for making me, my pets, and the people I love! You are my powerful, strong Creator. I love you, God. Amen."For young children (around 3-5 years old), I think the story and "What Does It Mean" sections are the perfect length and depth, and the other sections are fantastic to go a little deeper with older children or even adults!The illustrations in this book are STUNNING. I literally caught my breath several times when I turned the page and saw the next beautiful spread. The colors are vibrant and beautifully gradated, and the detail in many of the pictures is just exceptional. Diane Le Feyer deserves an award for this work; it is absolutely lovely. I've posted some pictures to show how wonderful the illustrations are.I read pretty carefully looking for any particular doctrinal positions (Calvinism/Armenianism, Dispensationalism/Covenant Theology, Lordship Salvation/Free Grace, etc), particularly in the "What Does It Mean" sections, and nothing in particular stood out to me. Because the book focuses on what the Bible stories reveal about God's names and character, there really isn't much in here that I feel would be controversial.I appreciated that the book includes some lesser-known stories that are not often included in children's Bibles, such as Jacob's dream, manna from heaven, Solomon asking for wisdom, and the day of Pentecost. The stories are all definitely "G-rated," which I have mixed emotions about. For example, Joseph's story doesn't specifically explain that he was a slave or talk about Potiphar's wife trying to seduce him or the baker who dies. It focuses on "The Lord My Rock" and how God turns our problems into something good. The crucifixion is also not explained in detail, beyond saying that Jesus' hands and feet were nailed to a cross and he died (see picture of this page). Parents can of course add more detail to the stories as they believe it is appropriate.We own many children's Bibles, but I think this one has catapulted to the top of my list of favorites. I love the focus on who God is and on how we can rely on Jesus and his enabling, not just our own efforts to "be good." And the illustrations are by far the most beautiful that I have seen in a children's Bible. Looking for a devotional Bible stories book you can read to your kids? I like this particular book because this is a children’s Bible story book based upon God’s titles found in the Word of God. There are forty chapters in the book with each covering a different title. The subtitle for the book is “40 Reasons to Trust God” and of course God’s title reveal His character and attributes which are reasons why we can trust God. I enjoyed reading this book to my children and also my children enjoyed it when I read it to them. They would often ask me to keep on reading to the next chapter as part of our nightly reading routine before they go to sleep.The book is laid it in chronological order moving from the traditional order of God’s creation to the second coming of Christ. I did appreciate the angle that the author organized each chapter based upon a title or name of God. There are nineteen stories from the Old Testament and twenty one in the New Testament. Each chapter quotes a Bible verse from various Bible translations related to the chapter’s title of God. There is also a statement within the first two pages of each chapter that summarizes the point of why that specific title of God is covered in its own separate banner. For instance for the chapter covering the title of God as “The Lord My Rock” we see the summary banner stating “God helps us. He turns our problems into something good.” This is helpful for me to tell my girls ahead of time what the chapter will be about before I dive into the story. I also appreciated the fact that for the Old Testament the titles of God also included the title in Hebrew. For instance for the title “The Lord will Provide” we also see below it in smaller font the Hebrew title “Jehovah Jireh.” This was kind of neat! I wish though they continued that with the Greek title in the New Testament. By the time we get to the New Testament the author focused a lot more on the titles of Christ rather than just God per se. Each chapter also end with a helpful section called “What does it mean?” which explains the story a little more towards the aim of application and what the story looks like if it was in today’s context. Also there’s a box section for the end of every story that includes passages to look up to learn more and “What Happened Next?”The illustrations were nice and enjoyable for little ones to look at. The cover was also beautifully designed and my kids enjoyed the glitters on it. I appreciated that this work was in hard cover that would help protect the pages and ensure its use for years to come. Having a bookmark was also a plus. I recommend this work.

The book is well written, my 6 year old can relate to the devotionals, and it has such beautiful illustrations! I am so happy with this purchase and would definitely recommend this book. I don't have to ask my son if he is ready to read his devotional, he usually has it in his hands asking me if I am ready! Lol! I love it!

I am a Sunday School teacher for the Senior High teens. Sometimes, you just want to take a complicated story in the bible and make it simpler to begin with and then it opens the door for discussion and elaboration of the details. This book has great stories about what happened to all the different characters of the Old and New Testament. It is the first place I look (after reading the scripture lesson) to step into the story. It's well written and the book is fabulous quality. Very nice.

This book is perfect for my 7, 5, and 3 year old. Vivid illustrations, age appropriate text, theologically true stories, and engaging questions - it's everything I was looking for! Many of us feel lost while looking for something beyond the Lloyd-Jones' Jesus Storybook Bible, look no further.

I bought this for my children, but it is a little over their head. I was hoping to be able to shorten these down a bit to get to their level. Unfortunately that is very hard to do.They will not sit still long enough to get through a devotion. They get bored and start to daze off. I have put this on the shelf until they are older. I want them to learn the attributes of God and how to pray according to His character. This book will do just that, but when they get a little older.
