People going into this play expecting a full and closed plot, one easy storyline, or anything more conventional like that will probably be disappointed. This play is about the importance of storytelling to humanity, and how it can change and reflect the world around it. Since that was what I expected when I saw it produced, I was completely blown away. I bought this script during the first intermission and didn't regret it at any point. I realize a lot of this was due to the great production, so some of that might be lost in just reading the script, but I would definitely say it is worth buying if this sounds interesting to you at all. (as a side note, there are only a couple monologues for guys as far as I could tell, one a short comedic about diet coke that you might be able to google, and another more frantic but maybe confusing one later on. just saying.)

I am a theater fan. I am a classic Simpsons fan (especially Cape Feare). I am a post-apocalyptic fiction fan. It's almost like this play was written with me in mind. But not as a character, the play doesn't need an annoying originalist arguing "It's 'the benevolent General Krull,' you heathens!"Storytelling is the oldest performance art and even the most classic stories have been altered through time to better teach their lessons to new audiences. But each time the story gets changed, something is lost. Washburn takes that concept and applies it to the Cape Feare episode of The Simpsons and sends it skipping through an alternate timeline. And it's a really fascinating time warp .I was reminded of how oral storytelling is why we know the tales of Homer. (Holy crap, I just got that.) I thought about the ending of Farenheit 451 and those who honorably chose to memorize books, and also thought about the telephone game and how we can't trust people to memorize books. And yet, with enough rehearsal, I'd trust just about anyone to memorize their lines.Mr. Burns is on a list that I refer to as TRL, my Theater Regret List, shows I should have seen but missed out of laziness or indifference. While it was a delightful and compelling read, I think that the third act needs to be seen to truly appreciate it. I hope I get that chance.Washburn puts out new plays like clockwork, and I'll be trying to keep up. I can't have her show up on the TRL twice.

The play may take a while to sink in for some; I woke up thinking about the play's progression, how it speaks to our obsession with image and entertainment. This play may be hard to "read" in that certain elements would be more clear on the stage. However, for those of us who don't live near the Off-Broadway lights, this is as close as we'll get. This play is a revelation, not of character, but of ideas. It wouldn't hurt to know something about morality plays, but I doubt that an absence of that knowledge would inhibit an understanding of the third act. Very beautiful.

How do we keep going on in the face of obvious disaster? We tell stories to each other around a flickering light. Thank you, Anne, for creating this exhortation to go on and reminder of why we need storytellers.

Anne Washburn's Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play is part human drama, part post-apocalyptic pageant. Washburn implies more than she says about her world, and in so doing gives us a script that will stay with you. While some aspects of this post-electric apocalypse don't make a lot of sense, the sense that Washburn makes of it is well worth the read.

A very interesting and thought provoking play. The third act didn't engage me the way the first two did, but I still think this is an important piece in the modern American theatre.

This play was very strange and confusing. I only had to read it for class, I would never do it for pleasure.

I don't get it, but it was quite humorous at times and interesting. Hopefully I can figure it out in the next 100000 years.
