Review

"Like most Syrian dishes, the recipes in Our Syria are flavorful, scrumptious and healthy. You will tremendously enjoy making and eating these dishes if you like international and healthy food. If this is your first time eating Syrian dishes, you will become addicted to them."―- The Washington Book Review"Our Syria is laced with glorious food to nourish the body and bittersweet memories to salve the soul. The ancient splendors of Syrian culture may have been decimated, but thanks to these two culinary documentarians, its foodways are being preserved."―- myAJC (blog)

I heard about this book on NPR while driving home from work.Itab Azzim was being interviewed, and after she described the book as a collection of "home recipes" from people who have been displaced by the war over there, and that many people used food to remind themselves of a life they may never have again, I knew I wanted the book. The recipes look awesome, and I am looking forward to trying all of them. However, I purchased the book to be able to see the stories behind the recipes, and the people behind those stories. An Amazon review maybe isn't the place to begin a discussion about compassion, but maybe when I am enjoying a meal designed by someone who's life has been torn to pieces, I will start to become more of a compassionate person, and choose to take the blessings in my life, and share them with others more than I do today.

I gifted this book to a friend from Syria and she loved it so much she posted about it on facebook. She and her husband shared memories and got emotional about the book, in addition to making some great food. I'm tempted to get another copy for myself because the food is so interesting and appealing.

I've probably made about half of the recipes in this book since I got it shortly after Thanksgiving and everything has come out delicious (although the cooking times are not always exact). 95% of the ingredients are available at our local grocery store and all of the cooking techniques are straightforward and we'll explained. This cookbook is a work of art for the masses!

Beautifully done cookbook with recipes from our home country. I appreciated the more complicated recipes alongside the simpler street food recipes. The pictures and stories were done perfectly.

The authors do not know how to cook, or they didn't proofread their work, one or the other. Most of the recipes they've gotten from Syrian women while they were there doing theater work in Syria, however I think they must have written a few things down wrong. Examples, their falafel recipe calls for an entire bunch of cilantro ... and then a half teaspoon of coriander?? Yeah, same thing. (Perhaps they meant cardamom and didn't proofread) One of their chicken recipes wants you to cook a whole chicken on a bed of onions at 475 degrees F for an HOUR. Welome to burning your house down. They got the Celsius right, at 180, but they just didn't proofread and if you don't know how to cook you're going to become good friends with your local fire department. They did give the proceeds of the "profit on the advance" to a charity, and they do get a lot of their spice mixes right (the spice on the aforementioned bake chicken was delicious and since I did it at 375, it came out wonderfully), but seriously, take better care. What if some novice picks this book up? That said, if you are an experienced cook you can kind of figure out what they're getting at and many of these recipes are 'down home' cooking, so delicious ... if you use your head.

I’m so grateful these women wrote this book. This has all the recipes from my childhood, in my mother’s kitchen, that I was too stubborn to write down. Now, it’s all in one place. Crucially, it’s authentic, accurate and an excellent representation of what a typical Syrian family would be eating.

This is my favorite cookbook right now. As a vegan, I've found that a vast majority of these recipes are inherently vegan or easilly veganized (except for the handful of straightup meat recipes). The layout and photos alone make this a coffee table book because I never want to set it down. I've tried about fifteen of the recipes and have yet to have anything come out inedible. It features a lot of fresh veggies and great spice combinations that weren't too difficult to find locally. The layout is beautiful and there are gorgeous photos for almost every recipes. Highly, highly recommend.

Heard about this book when the authors were interviewed on NPR--it's really exceptional. Great recipes, the pictures are great, and the stories are beautifully written. Would make a great gift (but I kept mine).
