I've had the pleasure of being able to learn under his student (and the student of his student) and it seems to be that this work (shortened here for English publication) is his crowning glory.Informed, full of contextual insight, and from the lips of a Jew specializing in the study of late second temple Judaism, this book gives a look at Jesus that doesn't contradict the Christian faith but, rather, enhance it. It's a bit overwhelming for a layman. But for new insight on the tension between Jesus and John the Baptist, what the phrase "the kingdom of heaven" means, why Jesus kept using "the son of man" in reference to himself, and many, many other subjects, this book is for you.
This book is very helpful in understanding not only the first century understanding of Ancient Israel but also how a "Messiah" would have been viewed. If one is serious about learning the culture of Ancient Israel, this is a good place to start.Most people are limited by theology instead of actual culture or history. This leads to presumptions that are completely off track. It is only when we put those of Ancient Israel back into their time period by understanding the culture, do we really have any idea of what was said and why it was said.The academics are very good in this book. I would suggest this book to anyone who is truly seeking to understand Ancient Israel on the level of the history and culture.
Flusser and prof. Notley did a great job with this book. If you are new to the Jewish backdrop to Jesus and the New Testament studies, this book will baptize you in a very nice way. Not your novel read, but a much slower read, which is not too ACADEMIC, though scholary. My copy is full of notes and highlighting. Flusser was an orthodox Jewish professor a Hebrew University, who had come in contact with Mennonites, I believe, and through them gained a genuine admiration for Jesus. Notley, a Christian, is Ph D professor at A B Simpson's Nyack College, in New York City.
This book in its first incarnation was simply called "Jesus". It had a lot of David Flusser's points of view about the place of Jesus in the world, as well as his personal experience with Bohemian and Mennonite Christians. It then proceded with a series of scholarly esseys and various themes of the teachings and life of Jesus. And it finished with several shorter esseys of lesser priority. This book had one major revision. This last revision, the current book has been tidied up a bit, brought up to date a second time, and given a more popular format. I particularly enjoyed the first version (translation, actually). Flusser provides a really important 1st century Jewish background to the historical Jesus.When I first read the book, it was not available so my son at Univ. of Washington got it out of one of their libraries. Then it was available and I bought and reread it. It was, the second edition. Finally this one came out and I have read it too. If I have confused or got some of this wrong please provide corrections.
David Flusser was an incompetent, liberal historian devoid of any true biblical understanding. Based on his complete misunderstanding of the biblical text, he basically claimed that the historical Jesus merely recycled the ideas and writings of earlier sects, but he completely missed the fact that Jesus continually drew on the older Hebrew Scriptures from which those writings sprang. Did he not notice the cross references in his Bible?Time and time again, Flusser gets basic facts completely wrong. On page 9, he cites Matthew 2:23 as proof that Mary and Joseph lived in Bethlehem prior to the birth of Jesus and only afterward resided in Nazareth, yet the passage says nothing of the kind. On page 35, he claimed that a person’s body does not become ritually impure even when one has eaten animals forbidden by the law of Moses; however, Leviticus 17:15 clearly says, “Anyone, whether native-born or foreigner, who eats anything found dead or torn by wild animals must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be ceremonially unclean till evening; then they will be clean†(NIV).Move along; there is nothing of value here (Romans 1:22).
