About the Author
Peter G. Northouse, PhD, is Professor Emeritus of Communication in the School of Communication at Western Michigan University. In addition to publications in professional journals, he is the author of Leadership: Theory and Practice (now in its eighth edition) and Introduction to Leadership: Concepts and Practice (now in its fourth edition) and coauthor of Leadership Case Studies in Education (now in its second edition) and Health Communication: Strategies for Health Professionals (now in its third edition). His scholarly and curricular interests include models of leadership, leadership assessment, ethical leadership, and leadership and group dynamics. For more than 30 years, he has taught courses in leadership, interpersonal communication, and organizational communication to both undergraduate and graduate students. Currently, he is a consultant and lecturer on trends in leadership research, leadership development, and leadership education. I had to buy this book for a class. I had not studied leadership formally in the past so I didn't have many points of reference, but this seems like a pretty comprehensive and well-written book. Each chapter covers a different approach to leadership and ends with some case studies and a survey that the reader can take. This is an academic approach to leadership and not a gimmicky self-help type book.
This book could be exponentially shorter if the author didn't talk circles around what he's saying. "How can I drag this sentence out and make myself sound smart?" If this wasn't for a college class, it would have never landed on my bookshelf.This book is fraught with grammar mistakes.The first half of the book, the author talks about work that OTHER PEOPLE have done. It's the same exact thing over and over, only spoken about in a different manner. It would be better titled "Leadership, Eighth Edition" written by Steve Jobs.
Required textbook for graduate studies. It contains easy to read substantial material with great chapter by chapter references. I would have liked the book to be of larger size close to or similar to other textbooks.
I have really enjoyed this textbook up until this point. It is thoughtful, well organized and a good general survey of leadership styles. I have also found it very balanced in the presentation of each leadership style, simply stating the precepts and the challenges with each style.
I used this book in Advanced Leadership for my PhD. It is an excellent resource. It covers leadership theory and practice very well. The primary references alone are worth the price of the book.
This book is outlined very much like a how-to book, or like a textbook on leadership, which I suppose it is. In this, you might learn only a few new things about leadership and leadership styles. If you don't have a very strong understanding or a lot of knowledge about leadership, this book is for you. If you're not new to the word of leadership in its many forms, this is more like a refresher/resource book and not something you need to read seriously. You can pick and choose your chapters if that's the case.
Most of the textbooks that I get from classes I resale but this book is a keeper. If you have any questions regarding leadership styles or methods this book gives great examples and details. It presents real life scenarios and how different leadership styles play in those scenarios. Northouse does a great job of explaining leaderships skills vs. leadership traits. It explains effective leadership skills even if you don't have the traits of leadership.
Northouse uses this text to introduce many common leadership theories and ways that you can put these theories into everyday life. While the pages are not the easiest to read, it does provide in depth insight into some of the many common practices of leadership. Highly reccomend even if it is not a required reading as it was for my leadership minor.
