Like other DK Eyewitness travel guides I've bought over the years to plan my vacations, their South Africa guide is another must read prior to travel. Of all the places I've traveled, I had the least understanding and knowledge of South Africa, and the DK travel helped me immensely - along with internet sources of course. It follows the exact same format as other DK guides, so if you're familiar with them and liked that format, you'll love this book as well. The guide is organized as follows: An excellent overview of the country and regions, followed by in depth details of each region along with reference codes to regional maps provided in each region, which I find very, very helpful. You always know where you are in the country and region as you follow their discussion in the guide. And as with all other DK Guides, they do an exceptional job of providing beautiful pictures for illustrative purposes. The old adage of a picture is worth a thousand words rings very true in my opinion. DK does the best job of effectively using pictures in my opinion. Then there are sections covering where to eat, where to say and essential travel tips such as health issues, safety, currency, transportation, etc.All in all a very useful guide which I believe provides the best basis for you to further delve into more specific details from web site links provided, or good old Google. But reading the guide before hitting the internet will save you a lot of time - or at least it did for me.The only reason I didn't rate it a full 5 star is because compared to other DK Guides, it was not quite as complete and I think could have provided a bit more information on some of the less famous National Parks and wildlife preserves. Although most of us think of wildlife first when thinking South Africa (or Africa generally I suppose), there is a ton of other things to see and do, especially along the coast from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town and parks within 100 miles of the coast. Stunningly beautiful scenery.Oh, and finally, I would say this is a great read and opportunity to learn a ton about this diverse and beautiful country even if you have no plans to travel there.
As all DK books, this had gorgeous photos, and was well laid out with lots of interesting sidebars. This was the one book we kept pulling out during our vacation, which covered large portions of the Kruger, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Northern Cape, KwaZulu Natal, Free State, and Western Cape. This book was always ready to help us decide where to stop/see.
we have been to South Africa, and wish i had this book then. a nice addition to the books i have. offers good details, place to go, stuff to see. great pictures, always a plus
DK Eyewitness are our favorite travel books. We use Eyewitness to plan our trips. The pictures really provide a nice visual of what we want to see and where we want to go. Unfortunately other travel books give more activities and businesses to contact.

Eyewitness Travel Books are always good with tons and tons of pictures. I've never found better travel books. Wish they would hurry up and make a Madagascar book.
This travel guide has a lot of photos, descriptions of animals, information about history, and recommendations for lodging, eating, shopping, and activities. It tries to cover everything, but it is a small book so it doesn't have a lot of listings for each town.
I am always pleased with the DK books. Going to South Africa in October so this has already helped with our trips.
