Finally, someone captures the beauty and serenity Texas' most wonderful region, without feeling compelled to show pictures of big cities and subdivisions from overhead!! I have searched for years for such book, and John Graves definitly delivers it!This book is full of interesting historic information, fused with lovely countryside images of the hill country.My only comment is that it would have been nice to have an idea (page by page) of where the pictures were taken. To find out, one must flip back and forth to the index page and cross-reference it with page numbers (which are not on all the pages). On the other-hand, the photos are not "soiled" with a bunch of letters, words, numbers, etc.A really nice coffee table book for those who love the heart of Texas.

In my opinion the author should have made this 1 book instead of several smaller editions. The book is a little out of date, but this happens. The Author is definitely a Dave Ramsey person who is Anti-credit card, cash only and it doesn't address the need to build credit for larger purchases. For Example: The Author stated she bought a car for $500 cash, but she didnt stay how long it lasted after the purchase or how often it broke down, or what necessary repairs cost.

Book 5 was OK, with some good money-saving tips. The rest were all very much common sense, and very repetitive. Also, an editor is badly needed. It seems to have been written at a 3rd- grade level, even with errors such as "to" in place of "too". Well, the set was only $5, so I guess you get what you pay for.

Great practical ideas! Must read! Kathy is a wonderful guide and cheerleader for financial security and a happier simpler life!

An excellent book, both for the traveler and the believer. It's definitely written from an Evangelical Christian perspective (i'm guessing Baptists will love this book!), which I as a Catholic found a bit overbearing. Nonetheless, the author's heart and love make this an indispensable guide to the Holy Land. It was the best book by far for my Jerusalem and Bethlehem voyages.

I found it quite Interesting to follow this author's descriptions as he walked the paths that Jesus and his disciples walked. I did notice that many of the biblical places have changed a lot compared to when Jesus walked them as described in the bible. I wonder if I would be disappointed to see Jerusalem and the other places that is so different to how I see them visualized by the scriptures. I like the times and places as I picture them from the bible.

Great book except Be Aware: "Image not included because of rights restrictions." There are NO photos in the kindle edition! This really takes away from the experience of the book. Would not purchase again unless paperback/ hardcover.

Of the books I rounded up to get me ready for traveling to Israel, this one was by far the best fit for my expectations. I loved Wayne Stiles' style of writing. It was like a journal with amusing commentary mixed with historical background and important details. But the most valuable part was the way he wove in the scripture pertinent to the locations and its implications. I found myself deeply moved by the provocative teaching that makes each location spiritually significant. My appetite was whetted for the journey to the Holy Land, from which I have just returned. I now plan to REREAD the book for even more information and inspiration.

From the description you get the idea that this will be a helpful guide to plan a trip to see Biblical sights in Israel. I did not find this to be the case.While he did present some interesting thoughts from Scripture and his experiences in the Holy Land, the book is more of a devotional than a travel guide. That is why my rating is lower.As some have mentioned, you may really enjoy reading this after your trip as a method of reflection.

Wayne, after reading your articles in the Jerusalem Post about various sites in Israel, I realized that I needed to purchase your book. Now I know Israel; I came from the USA to Israel in 1977 and have lived here ever since. Your descriptions of the various places, as well as the related spiritual insights as we "travelled" along were informative, inspiring and challenging. I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves the Bible, the land of Israel and all related to both of them. And your humor had my husband and I smiling if not laughing. During my sophomore or junior year in high school, my parents and I took advantage of an opportunity to tour the Holy Land, Egypt and Amman for 15 days. Words cannot describe the awe and wonder of walking where Jesus walked over 2000 years before, seeing Jerusalem, the Western (Wailing) Wall, to see the Garden of Gethsemane where He prayed and was arrested, to see Golgotha and finally, to see the Empty Tomb (He has risen indeed!)! Sadly, I didn't have the maturity and foreknowledge to journal all the things I saw, smelled, tasted, felt, and heard during my experience and thus, so many memories are lost. It is my greatest and deepest regret. Many times I have prayed for another such opportunity to visit Israel in the hopes of revisiting the hallowed ground and to journal my experiences there.As Wayne Stiles states in his introduction, this is NOT a chronological journal of the entire itinerary of Christ's life. Instead, it is one man's writings of his impressions, encouragement and challenges as he walks in Christ's footsteps and how He impacted those around Him during His ministry. Throughout the book, Stiles encourages us, the readers, with powerful words of wisdom, including his own personal experiences, lightly seasoned with good-hearted humor. You also get a glimpse into the heart and mind of the author as he challenges himself in his own relationship with Christ.

I had the opportunity of taking a group to the holy land and found out about Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus and purchased a copy to help prepare for the trip. I was so impressed with the book that I ordered one for each person accompanying me on the trip.A great book for devotional use and also for information and a great asset during the trip.

What an essential voice in the political commentary world! I loved Ben’s book “Bullies” and I’m loving this book too so far. I'm on my second reading.You don’t have to agree with everything he says to learn something from him. His arguments and logic are airtight. This book’s thesis is an important one. It IS Reason and Religious belief that makes this country great.Ben’s knowledge of classic Western philosophy is impressive. The scholarship is at times broad and deep. This book dabbles with some of the most powerful ideas in history, and it’s so beautifully written. It reminds me of Richard Tarnas' book, "The Passion of The Western Mind" (where he spends the first half the 500-page book talking about the massive influence of Judeo-Christian values as well). However, I like Ben's style and application to the contemporary American experience.Regarding political speculations, I really hope he does not run for VP. As I read Ben's book, I hear the tone and register in his voice as if I were listening to his podcast: I never want it to end. It would be a shame if The Ben Shapiro Show had to shut down. I want him and his family to live a Long, Prosperous, and Fulfilling life. We need to keep hearing his voice and perspective—without all the constraints being a political leader brings.This is Ben’s best book so far and definitely worth reading ASAP!P. S., If you want to see how consistently good Ben's work is, go to his YoutTube channel and check out Episode 207 (Nov. 10, 2016). Currently, he has only 286 views on it. However, he's still just as insightful and an interesting today with over 658,000 subscribers and around 100K views on his latest videos.

If you're familiar with Ben Shapiro, then this book is exactly what you'd expect. Spurious logic bent to fit whatever beliefs Shapiro has, smugly presented in a faux-intellectual way. Political pundit and liberal-hater Ben Shapiro? The guy who spends all day, every day writing devisively about politics? The guy who can go five minutes without bashing liberals (ie, half the country)? How can someone write that without dying of laughter?America has a love-shaped hole in its heart, and we shouldn't fil it with the absurdly hateful and devisive rhetoric of people like Ben Shapiro. We should be spending less time listening to political pundits of every stripe and more time listening to and attempting to understand each other. Good gravy, the scourge of these pundits who prey on our fears and ignorance just to turn a buck needs to end.

If you don't know where you've come from, you'll have a hard time knowing where you're headed. Ben gives a great presentation on the origins and development of Western Civilization. Highly recommend!!

The Right Side of History is historically accurate and philosophically consistent. It stays on the academic and logical side of the delicate balance between patriotic nationalism for no other reason than ‘Merica and a reasonable argument that indeed (as he contends in the book), “As a society, we are forgetting that almost everything great that has ever happened in history happened because of people who believe in both Judeo-Christian values and the Greek-born power of reason.”Shapiro has once again proved his argument through reason and answered his critics with undeniable truth. It’s far more than meager glorification of Western civilization. He spends ample time explain how we got where we are in the West and why the left wants to destroy the idea of democracy. An incredible read which was well worth reading the entire book the day it was released.

Note that none of the other 1-star reviews are verified purchases, so I figured I’d throw in my own $0.02 for something that I, like my fellow 1-star readers, have not (yet) read:Exactly what you’d expect from Ben Shapiro. Brilliant, decisive, and correct.Just bought it. Can’t wait to read it.

Europe in the High Middle Ages by William Chaster Jordan is the third book in the series The Penguin History of Europe. The High Middle Ages is the name given to the period of medieval history from 1000 to 1350. During these years, European civilization reached heights not seen in the West since the fall of the Roman Empire. The political situation in Europe stabilized somewhat, trade increased, cities grew, universities were established and learning flourished. The nations of Europe ceased to be helpless victims of foreign invasion and, through the Crusades even began to project power outside the continent.Although the nations of Europe began to take their modern shape during the high middle ages, political power was extremely decentralized, especially in France, more than in the period immediately before and afterwards. The Papacy became more prominent on the international stage and powerful Popes could even challenge kings and emperors for influence. It all ended in the middle fourteenth century with a change in climate that caused a decade of famine. Then the horrors of the Black Death struck Europe in 1349. No institution in Europe survived unscathed, and the optimism and vitality of the High Middle Ages was gone. When Europe began to recover from these disasters, it was no longer the Middle Ages, but the Renaissance, and the West was moving in a new direction.William Chester Jordan brings this fascinating period of history to life in his book. Like the other books in The Penguin History of Europe, The High Middle Ages focuses less on a detailed chronology of events and more on a general overview of cultural and historic developments, especially including the political development of the emerging nation states of Europe and their relationship with the Papacy. There is also a lot of information on the intellectual trends of the High Middle Ages as well as a good account of how it all seemed to fall apart in the fourteenth century. Unfortunately, the author breaks of the story in 1350, just as the Black Death is ravaging Europe, leading to a kind of cliffhanger effect. Still, I can recommend Europe in the High Middle Ages for anyone who wants to learn more about that fascinating period of history.

This addition to the Penguin series is good. A general survey of this time period and gives a grounding for readers interested in this subject.

Do not get the paperback. The print is so tiny it is nearly unreadable

A great overview of the period.

This is a scholarly text that covers the time span from about the 11th century through the 14th. It was written by a Princeton professor and, of course, is well-documented and detailed. It is a fine book but can tend to dullness as so many of the political personages and policies are written about in great detail. It does, however, merit reading by the serious student of medieval history. It's just that some of these sorts of texts can get tiresome after soooo many facts. Nonetheless, I wouldn't pass it by if I were seeking a good, well-rounded (basically political) text during this time period.

An enjoyable tour of an intriguing time. Just enough detail to bring some of the memorable people to life while allowing the narrative to flow on leaving me with a felt sense of having visited the High Middle Ages myself.

This is a decent introductory survey of the period, but does not quite live up to the other two books already published in the Penguin History of Europe series, Inheritance of Rome (400-1000) and Pursuit of Glory (~1650-1815).Perhaps it is unfair to compare "High Middle Ages" to the other two stellar works, and this remains an adequate book which I enjoyed reading. But there might be better surveys of the period out there.

A good overview of the period, although certain parts (philosophical issues, plague, but especially impact of other people such as mongols) feel a bit rushed.

Nothing compares to making the affliction the medicine, which means to have mind and breath rest on each other. Therefore turning the breath should be included in turning the light around.When you sit, lower your eyelids and then establish a point of reference. Now let go. But if you let go absolutely, you may not be able to simultaneously keep your mind on listening to your breathing. You should not allow your breathing to actually be audible; just listen to its soundlessness. Once there is sound, you are buoyed by the coarse and do not enter the fine. Then be patient and lighten up a little. The more you let go, the greater the subtlety; and the greater the subtlety, the deeper the quietude.Eventually, even the subtle will be interrupted, and the true breathing will appear whereupon the substance of mind will become perceptible. This is because when the mind is subtle, breath is subtle; when mind is unified, it moves energy. When breath is subtle, mind is subtle; when energy is unified, it moves mind. Stabilization of mind must be preceded by development of energy, because the mind has no place to set to work on; so focus on energy is used as a starting point. This is what is called the preservation of pure energy.Buddha said, "Place the mind on one point, and everything can be done."If the mind tends to run off, then unify it by means of the breath; if the breath tends to become rough, then use the mind to make it fine. If you do this, how can the mind fail to stabilize?Generally speaking, the two afflictions of oblivion and distraction just require quieting practice to continue unbroken day after day until complete cessation and rest occur spontaneously. When you are not sitting quietly, you may be distracted without knowing it; but once you are aware of it, distraction itself becomes a mechanism for getting rid of distraction.As for unaware oblivion and oblivion of which you become aware, there is an inconceivable distance between them. Unaware oblivion is real oblivion; oblivion that you notice is not completely oblivious. Clear light is in this.Distraction means the spirit if racing; oblivion means the spirit is unclear. Distraction is easy to cure; oblivion is hard to heal. Using the metaphor of illness, one that involved pain or itch can be treated with medicine, but oblivion is a symptom of paralysis, where there is no feeling.A distracted mind can be concentrated, and a confused mind can be set in order; but oblivion is unformed darkness, in contrast to distraction, which still has some direction.Oblivion means the lower energies are in complete control, ruling in negativity and darkness. When you are sitting quietly, if you become drowsy, this is oblivion. Repelling oblivion is simply a matter of tuning the breath. The "breath" in this case is respiration, not the "true breathing." Nevertheless the true breathing is present within it.Whenever you sit, you should quiet the mind and unify your energy. How is the mind quieted? The mechanism is in the breathing, but the mind alone knows you are breathing out and in; do not let the ears hear. When you don't hear it, the breathing is fine; and when breathing is fine, the mind is clear. If you can hear it, the breathing is rough, which means the mind is cloudy. Cloudiness means oblivion, so it is natural to feel sleepy. Even so, the mind should be kept on the breathing.Just maintain a subtle looking and listening. What is "looking"? It is the light of the eyes spontaneously shining, the eyes only looking inward and not outward. Not looking outward yet being alert is inward looking; it is not that there really is such a thing as looking inward.What is "listening"? It is the light of the ears spontaneously listening, the ears only listening inward and not outward. Not listening outward yet being alert is inward listening; it is not that there really is such a thing as listening inward.Listening means listening to the soundless; looking means looking at the formless.When the eyes do not look outside and the ear do not listen outside, they are closed in and have a tendency to race around inside. Only by looking inward and listening can you prevent this inner racing as well as oblivion in between.When you sink into oblivion and become drowsy, get up and take a walk. When your spirit has cleared, sit again. It's best to sit for a while in the early morning when you have free time. After noontime, when there are many things to do, it's easy to fall into oblivion. Also there's the need to fix the length of time of meditation; it is only essential to set aside all involvements and sit quietly for a while. Eventually you will attain absorption and not become oblivious or sleepy.

I have found other readers' comments so helpful so I will share one to others ... If you want to "safely" raise Kundalini, this may be a great method - but you should also consider reading JJ Semple's "Deciphering the Golden Flower One secret at a time" + "Awaken healing energy through the Tao", by Mantak Chia. Mantak Chia explains human energy systems through the Chinese Tao understanding, which prepares the body (and the currents / nerves / nadis of the body) for the full Kundalini flow so full power of Kundalini can be harnessed with less side effects. (see page 5: "Lessen Side effects by careful preparation". I have only begun Mantak Chia's book but his in-depth explanation of Kundalini / Chi and energy flow systems makes sense to me (and Mantak Chia comes highly recommended from a close friend). When dealing with Kundalini, I get the impression we need to "lessen side effects" and learn as much as we can first! Safe journey friends!

This book has ancient wisdom in it which in the past was difficult to access. Now everyone can transcend their personality and let the inner self take it's rightful place as the consciousness which has been masquerading as a person.

A marvel of clarity compared to the Jung sponsored Wilhelm translation. No fault to Wilhelm, he did the best he could as westerner with our cultural biases.

Hard to describe the quality of impact this book and author's translation has had on me. Not for beginners to Taoist thinking and practice. For me, having come to understand the basic principals of Taoism, this is useful as a series of instructional meditations. Thomas Cleary provides some of the most readable (to me) translations of Taoist and Buddhist literature. His notes (the entire second half of the book) provide helpful framing of the translation. It's necessary to remember that this way of thinking comes from a culture and language that has almost no overlap with Western reductionist mindset and language, so English is a very difficult vehicle for communicating it's ideas. Cleary does a fine job of helping bring this spiritual view of the world to my very very Western mind.

From my read, the techniques outlined in 'The Secret of the Golden Flower' are essentially the Tao version of Mahamudra instruction (or vice-versa), which entails `looking' directly at the quintessence of the primordial nature of the mind via calm abiding (samadhi) and insight (vipassana) mediation.Regardless of which way you may view it (from the perspective of the commentary about Dr. Jung's take on Wilhelm's original translation), this work is a tré cool presentation of the material ... in classic `TC' style - - right to the point: no frills.
